Our pets … we love them to the ends of the earth and back. That said, they require … work. Part of that work includes cleaning up pet fur. Though it’s not always easy, getting rid of dog or cat fur –– or at least, keeping it to a minimum –– can be done with the help of a few special tools and tricks.
Why cleaning up pet hair is important
A brief word on the importance of always having a clean home environment, but especially when pets are present –– and why it’s particularly important to pick up dog hair or cat hair. Although it’s rare for illnesses to be passed from animals to humans (and vice versa), there can be health issues caused by pet fur in the home. Pet dander, for example, can trigger reactions among allergy sufferers as well as in people with asthma. Pets that spend a lot of time outdoors are also at a higher risk of carrying in unwanted bacteria or bugs –– and pollen, which hay fever sufferers know all too well. Animal dander further irritates hay fever symptoms, but it’s not easy to just avoid pets when these symptoms arise. Instead, what is needed is a stronger year round approach to minimizing pet hair and dander throughout the home. Since pollen can easily be transferred inside the house and onto the furniture from your pet’s fur, one of the best things to do is simply brush pets (you may want to wear a mask) and wipe them down with a damp cloth before coming back inside. It really is a great and helpful solution, since we can’t realistically give our pets baths every time they come into the house.
The quick checklist for keeping clean and healthy with pets
- Daily cleaning of floors and surfaces
- Washing hands after handling animals or after cleaning up pet messes
- Keeping pets clean and well-groomed

The Bona Guide to Cleaning Up Pet Fur and Handling Pet Messes
Bona Pet System
Our favorite method for picking up pet fur and effectively cleaning up pet messes is using the Bona Pet System. Use the Microfiber Mop for daily dust mopping along with the Bona Pet System Sweeping Pad, and tackle any pet mess with the PowerPlus Deep Clean Pad. The Bona Pet System Sweeping Pad is especially designed with electrostatic action, which allows the fibers of the pad to easily grab hold of pet hair, dander and allergens –– trapping them away. And the great news? Bona microfiber pads can be washed and reused up to 500 times.
The Bona Pet System Microfiber Mop also includes the Bona PowerPlus Microfiber Deep Clean Pad. So when you’re ready to wet-mop, just switch from the Sweeping Pad to the Deep Clean Pad on your mop head. Next, spray your floor with Bona Multi-Surface Floor Cleaner (either for dogs or cats), and begin mopping. Safer for people and pets, our waterbased cleaning formulas are powerful stain removers that eliminate and neutralize organic pet odors. Also safe for everyday use, they are residue-free and fast-drying.
How to keep dog and cat hair off the furniture and other items
Removing pet hair from furniture and carpets can sometimes be tricky. Here are a few practical tips and tricks for gathering up the excess fur from your rugs, sofas and chairs.
- Rubber squeegee
Great for getting into thicker pet fur areas, especially in the carpets; just pull it or push it along, and before you know it, you’ll have a nice collection of fur. You can even get the squeegee slightly wet to use on a rug or carpet. They’re very easy to clean. - Masking tape or pet hair roller
No one likes having to leave the house covered in dog or cat fur (and they always seem to want to snuggle up to you at just the right time). A bit of masking tape or a pet hair roller is a quick solution to tidy yourself up and remove your pet’s hair from your person before heading out. - Rubber cleaning gloves
Throw on a pair of rubber cleaning gloves and run your hands along your furniture to quickly collect fur around your home. - Dryer sheets
Also known as fabric softener sheets, dryer sheets are great for picking up pet hair. Just dampen a dryer sheet slightly and gently brush along your surfaces. You’ll be amazed! - Humidifier
Perhaps it’s not as ideal during the summer months, but a humidifier can definitely help in the winter months by preventing dry skin, and in keeping pet hair from sticking to surfaces. - Vacuuming in a criss-cross pattern
It’s much better to use the Bona Pet System Microfiber Mop with the Bona Pet System Sweeping Pad for picking up pet fur on your hardwood or hard-surface floors so you don’t add to the problem of allergens by blowing pet hair and dander around. The Pet System Mop is also highly effective when it comes to getting into corners and areas that are hard to reach. For carpeted areas, however, you’ll need to vacuum. You’ll pick up more loose fur when you vacuum in a criss-cross pattern.
A solution for every pawsibility
Shedding? Accidents? Dirt? You’re covered. The Bona Pet System includes a floor mop, pads and cleaners to handle pet messes, fur and dander, and is safer for pets and families.
More ways you can mitigate pet hair and dander matters
- Keep filters clean or change them as needed, for example:
- Check or change the vacuum cleaner filter (and vacuum cleaner bags when applicable)
- Check or change the bathroom fan filter
- Check or change Air filters
- Comb your pet’s hair regularly.
Your pet will love you for it, and your home will be far less furry. - Consider getting an air purifier
If you battle allergies, but love your pets, you may find that a good air purifier is a worthwhile investment. Some air purifiers claim to effectively remove 99.9% of impurities from the air in home environments, and you can select a filtration system that is specifically designed to filter out pet dander and other allergens.
