Overview

Most hospital floors experience heavy, daily wear and tear. From the high volume of foot traffic, to the transport of equipment, to the various chemicals that come in contact with the floor’s surface, keeping the floor clean and safe is a tough task. Resilient floors tend to be the floor surface of choice for most healthcare facilities. The easy-to-maintain surface meets stringent healthcare codes and can handle dirt, spills, equipment and constant cleaning. When it comes time to renovate or replace resilient floors, time and safety are a toppriority. Operating or patient room downtime is not only costly, it also adds an extra layer of stress to the hospital’s daily patient care routine.

The Challenge

At Centennial Hills Hospital in Las Vegas, NV, the 500 square foot sheet vinyl labor and delivery room floor needed a major renovation. Standard wear and tear left the floor slippery and unsafe for the staff. Because of continuous cleaning and use of anti-bacterial chemicals the floor became slippery, resulting in a number of employee falls and injuries. The administration considered replacing the floor, which meant the room would be out of use for at least two days. They sought a better solution that could offer the same floor renovation result but with less downtime and expense.

The Process

The first step was to wet-abrade the floor with the Bona® FlexiSand buffer, Bona MultiDisc drive plate and 80-grit Bona Diamond abrasives.

The floor was then cleaned using the Bona Commercial System™ 24” Multi-Surface Mop and Bona Commercial System Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner.

Once the floor was dry, one coat of Bona Commercial System Base Color (Fog) was applied. The system’s base colors are ultra-quick drying, and heavily pigmented to provide single-coat coverage. A combination of Kona Beige and Schist Stone Variegated Color Chips were added to give extra design and texture to the floor.

After just a few hours the base color was dry and ready for two coats of Bona Commercial System Resilient Floor Finish (Satin). Bona anti-slip additive was mixed into each layer of finish to give the floor extra protection against slips and falls.
