Modern Day Sanding Sequences

When it comes to sanding wood floors, today’s professionals can take advantage of groundbreaking advancements in sanding machines, dust containment systems, and abrasives technologies. From the Bona Power Drive completely changing the way many Craftsmen approach their sanding process; to the Bona Portable or Atomic DCS solving your customer’s #1 concern (dust); to Bona’s blended mineral abrasive choices and Bona Diamond, the game has changed for the better all the way around. So, rethink your total approach to sanding floors and start turning out cleaner floors with more precise surface quality than ever before – whether you’re trying to produce natural, stained, or oiled floors.
The technological advancements in sanding abrasives has exploded over the past fifteen years – but are you taking full advantage of these incredible changes? Bona Abrasives are designed around a single philosophy – to “Create the Perfect Surface”. They’re made specifically for wood floor sanding machines, so they perform better (and last longer) than competitive abrasives made for other substrate materials/processes, then converted to fit floor sanders. Bona’s modern day abrasives offering provides professionals the most technologically advanced abrasives in the industry; aggressive and long-lasting without sacrificing smoothness - to achieve the absolute best surfaces for coloring and or finishing wood floors while maximizing adhesion
Floor Sanding Sequences
The most important thing to remember in your sanding sequence is to still follow NWFA’s general rule: never skip more than one grit of paper between cuts. Twenty years ago, a professional would tend to use the same “color” of paper all the way through their sequence, but today’s blended mineral abrasives are dialed-in to give you better performance for each specific step. So, step up your game and rethink your approach to produce better floors with today’s modern sanding machines and high-tech abrasives. This specific floor sanding grit sequence works for natural, stained or oiled floors that demand a scratch-free surface; while still being open enough to permit proper colorant penetration and achieve optimal adhesion for oils, stains, sealers and finishes.

Fine sanding can also be done with 80 or 120 grit Bona Diamond Abrasives and the optional Bona Steel Plates accessory. One set of Bona Diamond Abrasives lasts 4,000 – 6,000 square feet and works perfectly for your final pass on raw wood, especially when working with species like brazilian cherry, maple, hickory, ash and pine for a scratch-free results.
So, how does this look in a real-world scenario, combining this new knowledge of abrasives and sanding machine technology? Here’s just one example utilizing the above sequence with modern sanding machines (and all hooked up to our Bona Portable or Atomic DCS System vacs):
- Coarse Sanding: 50 grit Bona Green Abrasives (belt sander or Bona Power Drive w/weights if needed)
- Medium Sanding: 60 grit Bona Blue Abrasives (Bona Power Drive** w/single weight if needed) **reduces edging 50-80%
- Edge Sanding: 80 grit Bona Blue Abrasives (**if not using Power Drive in previous step, may have to drop back to 60 grit because you’ll have a lot more edging to do)
- Fine Sanding: 80 or 120 grit Bona Diamonds (Bona Power Drive w/Bona MultiDisc, ¼” IM Pads, and Steel Plates) Then make one run with the Bona Tampico Brush attached to your Power Drive and a DCS Back Vac; dry tack; and you’ve just created “The Perfect Surface”!
