Overview
The Volunteer Fire Station in Bratislava, Slovakia is an active first responder site that gets a great deal of foot traffic and also serves as a meeting point for the city firefighters One room in the station served as a storage area for hoses and equipment but also housed historical items such as photos and memorabilia. The room was being renovated to become a training and multimedia room but first, the worn and damaged floor needed a significant overhaul.
The Challenge
The client had a dated resilient floor that had fallen into a poor state. In addition to the problems surrounding the durability and design of the floor, the client needed to have the job completed by the end of the year. This gave the contractors only four days to complete the entire project. The Bona team was called in to renovate the floor with the Bona Resilient Renovation Solution.
The Process
First, damaged areas of the floor were sanded with Bona Abrasives and then the team fixed larger grooves and holes with Bona PU Filler, a two-part polyurethane filler and adhesive that is innovated for quick and durable repair of resilient floors. After the repairs were finished, a final sanding of the floor created an even, flat surface.
Next, the team began a wet sanding process by applying Bona Remove R, a quick, efficient, and aggressive cleaning agent using the Bona Flexisand with Bona Diamond Abrasives. Then the floor was cleaned with a first pass of the Bona Power Scrubber. The surface was then neutralized with water and cleaned once again. Throughout the application process, ventilators were used to help the surface dry more quickly.
Once the floor was clean and dry, the team began applying the first coat of Bona PU (Colour RAL 3000 Flame Red) a hardwearing 2K waterborne PUR-based paint developed for renovation of resilient floors. After the first coat was dry, a second coat was applied with the addition of Bona Creative Chips to create a decorative, premium design aesthetic. The following day, the team applied two layers of Bona PURE, a 2K waterborne, clear, hard-elastic finish that serves as long-term surface protection.

- Safe - Due to the wet sanding process, no harsh chemical smells could be detected during or after the Bona Resilient System was applied. Additionally, by renovating rather than replacing the flooring surface the old floor material was kept out of the landfill.
