Renovation of the Slovak Philharmonic's Iconic Flooring

Bratislava, Slovakia

Transforming 600m² of flooring to its former glory

The Slovak Philharmonic building in Bratislava, Slovakia, is a cornerstone of the city's vibrant cultural scene. Known as the Reduta, this Neo-Baroque masterpiece, constructed between 1913 and 1919, hosts a plethora of performances in its main concert hall, renowned for its exceptional acoustics. The hall's European white oak flooring, laid in an exquisite herringbone pattern, required extensive renovation due to years of wear. Golden Wood Parkety Design, a Bona Certified Craftsman, undertook the project, transforming 600 square meters of flooring to its former glory using the Bona system.

Initial Condition

The iconic flooring of the Slovak Philharmonic had suffered significant damage over time. Heavy scratching from chairs along with tiny holes caused by years of a cello's endpin being placed on the floor during rehearsals and performances marred the surface. In addition, the wood floor had ambered overtime detracting from the hall's grandeur and necessitating a comprehensive restoration to preserve both its aesthetic and functional integrity.

1. Sanding

The process began with the use of Bona Green Ceramic abrasives, ensuring an efficient and smooth removal of the damaged surface layers, along with a combination of several machines including the Bona Flexisand, Bona Belt Lite, and Bona CombiEdge. The floor was sanded down to bare wood, setting a pristine foundation for further treatment.

To address any seams in the flooring, Bona Mix & Fill Plus was used, followed by another pass with the Bona Flexisand and Bona DCS 70 and 25. This step ensured a flawlessly prepared surface, ready for finishing.

A hint of color was added using Bona Amber primer, enhancing the natural beauty of the oak. This was followed by two coats of Bona Traffic HD RAW, providing unprecedented durability while maintaining the pure, raw wood appearance cherished by the Philharmonic.

Transformation and Final Result

The renovation restored the flooring to its original beauty, enhancing the aesthetic of the Slovak Philharmonic's main concert hall. The transformation not only improved the visual appeal but also ensured the floor's durability for many more years of performances. Golden Wood Parkety Design expert application of the Bona system successfully preserved a critical piece of Bratislava's cultural heritage.
