Rethink resilient floor replacement — Bona has the solution!

Arizona-based Havasu Regional Medical Center needed an upgrade for its old, worn, resilient floors. Important to the process, the facility sought a cost-effective solution to renew and improve the operating room floors with minimal downtime. This led the medical center to the Bona Resilient Solution which upgraded the floors without the mess, expense, and time-intensive process of tearing out the floors. The Bona Resilient Solution offered a cost savings of up to 75%, a 4 hour renewal process, with only 18 total downtime hours. Compared to the standard new floor installation process which runs a minimum of three days and costs several hundred thousand dollars more, the benefit of utilizing the Bona are clear.

The challenge

At Havasu Regional Medical Center, the operating room floor needed a major upgrade. Standard wear and tear left the floor slippery and unsafe for the staff. Because of continuous cleaning and use of anti-bacterial chemicals the floor became slippery, resulting in a number of employee falls and injuries. The administration considered replacing the floor, which meant the room would be out of use for at least three days. They sought a better solution that could offer the same floor renovation result but with less downtime and expense.

The solution

Bona teamed up with Havasu Regional Medical Center to offer a revolutionary solution – a faster, more sustainable floor renewal system. The facility team was introduced to the Bona Resilient Solution. A simple, easy-to-follow process used to upgrade resilient floors in less than half the time it would take to replace the floor, with minimal disturbance to the rest of the facility. Rather than tear out the existing floor, an expensive and environmentally harsh process, the Bona Resilient Solution promised to fully renew the floor.

"We would reach a point where we have to completely replace the floors at a huge cost and shut down the ORs for an extended amount of time or we have to be out of compliance.””

Mark Mayberry

Security and Emergency Management Coordinator

The Process

Wet abrading

The floor was wet abraded with a Bona FlexiSand DCS® Buffer, Bona Multidisc drive plate and 80-grit Bona Diamond Abrasives to remove the old layers of polish and to properly prep the floor for renewal.

Colour & Chips

Before the application of colors and chips, the floor was cleaned using a Bona Commercial System® Multi-Surface Mop Kit and Bona Commercial System® Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner.  Once dry, one coat of Bona Commercial System® Resilient Floor Base Color in Warm Pewter was applied while Bona Commercial System® Domino Color Chips were added for added design.

The Results

Before-After.png

By using the Bona Resilient Solution, Lake Havasu Regional Medical Center realized the following benefits:

  • Cost Savings - Rather than 3 or more days to replace the floor, our resilient floor renewal had the operating room ready for use in only 18 hours. Downtime in an operating room would have been tens of thousands of dollars per day. Havasu Regional Medical Center will realize significant product and labor savings in the future by not having to strip or polish the floor ever again.
  • Minimal Downtime - The hospital staff was able to get back in the room within 18 hours - much quicker than the originally expected time frame of a minimum of 3 days. This minimal downtime meant an exponential financial gain for the hospital with more flexibility to treat patients.
  • Safer for Employees - The durable and slip-resistant floor has made the room safer for employees. The medical team was able to tell a difference in the grip of the floor immediately and are safer walking on it during surgery when liquids and chemicals are present.
  • Beautiful Appearance - Bona Resilient Floor Solution offers a wide range of styles with six base colors and 13 color chip options. Rather than ripping out the old floor, the system works with the existing surface to transform and upgrade the appearance.
