Wood floors make for healthier homes, families – and flooring craftsmen
Harnessing our innovative spirit, Bona has been a leading force in developing more sustainable products and systems for wood floor contractors. We are proud pioneers of the first waterborne wood floor lacquers and silane-based wood floor adhesives. Our revolutionary dust containment systems are designed to create healthier homes and work environments for wood flooring contractors.
Our commitment doesn't stop there. We have stringent testing procedures to ensure we deliver healthier, and more sustainable products without compromising on the exceptional quality you expect from our products and systems. Here are just a few of the reasons why Bona Professional products are the safer choice for flooring craftsmen and floor owners.
- Reduced Exposure to Harsh Chemicals: Our waterborne lacquers and silane-based adhesives lower the risk of exposure to harsh chemicals (source).
- Improved Indoor Air Quality: Our dust containment systems minimize airborne dust particles, promoting better indoor air quality (source).
- High-Quality, Safer Materials: Our products undergo stringent testing procedures to ensure their safety and sustainability without compromising on quality.
- Bona's innovative packaging: All Bona lacquer jugs and bottles are made with more than 50% PCR plastic.

Our commitment to sustainable practices is the foundation for our innovation
Since 1919, Bona has believed that quality workmanship and healthier homes go hand in hand. That's why we've developed an innovative range of products designed to meet the needs of flooring professionals while reducing environmental impact.
In the 1970s, we pioneered the shift from solvent-based to waterborne coatings. Today, we're still at the forefront of innovation – developing lacquers like Bona Traffic GO – a groundbreaking and more sustainable product, that is phasing out PFAS and isocyanate to offer safer and healthier application. We're committed to providing solutions that positively impact you, your work, your customers, and our planet.

Bona Wood Floor Lacquers: revolutionizing wood floor renovation
The lacquers determine the durability of a wood floor. For decades, Bona have been offering top of the line products and we have the Bona Traffic and Bona Mega families to show for it. Regardless of what sheen or level of durability your floor project needs, Bona offers you a premium sustainable solution. Bona's topcoats resist wear, scuff, scratch, and chemicals, meeting diverse needs including sports floors.

For healthier homes, Bona Wood Floor Primers set the standard
Bona Wood Floor Primers deliver exceptional performance, bringing superior quality to craftsmen, their clients, and their homes, ensuring robust and lasting wood flooring. The EMICODE Certification indicates that our primers meet stringent third-party standards for low indoor air emissions; helping to create safer home environments for flooring craftsmen and their customers.

Bona Oils: Natural Solutions for Healthier Floors
Low in odour and easy to apply, Bona Craft Oils are sustainable, plant-based oils that enhance the natural beauty of your wood floors while offering exceptional wear resistance. Easy to work with and suitable for most wood species, they’re designed with a low environmental impact in mind. With less than 4% solvent content, it ranks among the safest and cleanest oils on the market.

Bona Silane Adhesives: 3rd Party Certificates Ensures Safer Products
Bona Silane Adhesives, solvent-free and carrying the EMICODE EC1 R plus approval, are the unseen heroes behind world-class wood floors. Prioritizing safe indoor air quality, they create a healthier environment for both contractors and homeowners. Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our unique formulations, crafted using premium raw materials. This ensures the highest level of adhesive security while contributing to a sustainable future.

Bona Traffic GO for high traffic floors – at the forefront of sustainability
Bona Traffic Go is the next-generation, isocyanate-free lacquer that delivers the ideal combination of working simplicity and heavy-wear durability. The result is a high-end 2K lacquer with the easy usability of 1K.
Natural and safer floor renovation
Being at the forefront of sustainability, Bona goes beyond the current legislative barriers of today, and is ready for the tougher legislation of tomorrow. All our 2K products already contain less than 0,1 % diisocyanate. So, by using Bona products you are not subject to the EU course “Safe use of di-isocyanates”. The formula for Bona Traffic GO was likewise developed with health and sustainability in mind.
- Phasing out Isocyanate. Isocyanate is used in hardeners as a catalyst to create durability. However, it can cause health problems such as allergies and asthma. Without compromising performance, Bona Traffic GO is free from isocyanate due to its built-in hardener.
- Phasing out PFAS. PFAS components are synthetically produced, and as such, they do not decompose in nature and can result in health problems. The compounds are used to improve leveling properties. In Bona Traffic GO, we are phasing out PFAS and replacing it with safer and more sustainable components.
- Less than 3% VOCs. Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are evaporated from many everyday items. Exposure to VOCs can be harmful, so it is important to reduce the levels. Bona offers products with lower levels than required. With Bona Traffic GO, we go even further, having VOC levels below 3%, fulfilling the EC1 Plus certification.

Healthier work environments for flooring craftsmen
At Bona, we strive daily to meet the toughest of industry standards when it comes to sustainability. Although there is still much work to be done, we go forth confidently as an industry leader, consistently paving the path to a brighter future for craftsmen and floor owners. Our certifications provide the clarity and guidance to keep us on the sustainable path.

Emicode EC1 Plus
This certification from GEV measures emissions from flooring installation products, adhesives, and building materials. Our products carrying the EMICODE® EC1PLUS label offer the best possible assurance against indoor air pollution, ensuring high-level health protection and environmental compatibility.

Afnor
This French regulation sets criteria for indoor air emissions. Our A+ rated products have the lowest emissions, contributing to a healthier work environment.
The label provides simple and visible information about the volatile contaminants of the product once installed in an enclosed space. It identifies products using an emissions class (A+, A, B, C) based on the product’s performance in terms of VOC emissions (Volatile organic compounds) in the air inside a building as per the ISO 16000 standard. These emissions are measured 28 days after the product is installed, applied or incorporated into a room.

DIBt
Products approved by Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt) ensure safe emission levels for people moving in, as per German regulations.

GREENGUARD
UL Environment's GREENGUARD Certification program identifies interior products and materials with low chemical emissions, improving the quality of the air where the products are used. A majority of our primers, lacquers and adhesives are certified for lower indoor air emissions.

EU Ecolabel
This voluntary label promotes environmental excellence throughout Europe. Our products carrying the EU Ecolabel have a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle.

FEP Parquet Refinishable Program
The FEP Parquet Refinishable Program is a certification program designed to identify parquet products with wear/top layers thick enough to be refinished, along with products to aid floor owners in the decision making process.
The aim is to promote parquet which is at least twice resandable and thus putting forward the inherent advantage of parquet compared to other floorings due to it’s durability that can be extended due to refinishing.
Bona is proud to be included for both our Recoat/Silver and Refinish/Gold floor treatment programs which serve to certify the parquet.

LEED certification
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the world's most widely used green building rating system. LEED certification provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings, which offer environmental, social and governance benefits.

BREEAM
BREEAM is an internationally recognised measure of a building's sustainability. Some 535,000 buildings have been BREEAM certified, with a further 2,217,000 registered for certification. While many of these are in the UK, increasing numbers are now in more than 74 other countries.

Save energy and reduce CO2 with wood floor refinishing

Carbon emission savings of 78% = the energy to power 9,000 households
From a study conducted by the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL), which Bona participated in, it was discovered that refinishing wood floors is beneficial in terms of renovating versus new floor installation. Consider Bona's yearly production of floor finishes, then calculate the m2 of floors they cover. If new floors were installed to cover the same area, the energy use would be 1.8 billion kWh more* –– enough energy to run 9,000 Swedish households for a year!**
90% CO2 savings = 9,600 flights around the globe
Floor renovation saves up to 90%* in carbon footprint reduction compared to the installation of a new floor. Consider Bona’s yearly production of floor finishes and calculate the m2 of floors they cover. The carbon footprint per m2 versus that of new floor installations is 108,000 tonnes of CO2 –– the equivalent of 9,600 flights around the world!***

* Calculations based on the IVL report will be explained in detail later in the report.
