St. Peter Stiftskulinarium

The Wood Floor Renovation at St. Peter Stiftskulinarium, Salzburg, Austria

Nestled in the historic heart of Salzburg, Austria, St. Peter Stiftskulinarium stands as Europe’s oldest restaurant, with an unparalleled legacy spanning over 1,200 years. Renowned for its classical architecture and timeless charm, this iconic destination required the thoughtful restoration of its wood floors to preserve its rich heritage while ensuring durability for generations to come. With a deep commitment to craftsmanship and quality, Reiböck & Reiböck took on the ambitious task of revitalizing the venue’s flooring. Partnering with Bona, they achieved a flawless result that seamlessly blends modern innovation with historical elegance.

Faced with unique challenges, the restoration project needed customized approaches for different areas of the restaurant. The Main Baroque Hall, spanning 100 m², required a complete overhaul as the original oak herringbone floors were beyond repair. Reiböck & Reiböck painstakingly installed over 1,000 nails to secure the new floorboards, replicating the historic design while enhancing structural integrity. Meanwhile, in the Virgil Salon and Haydn Rooms, covering a total of 50 m², the existing oak floors were sanded and refinished with utmost precision, retaining their original character while rejuvenating their appearance.

Key to the success of this project was the extensive use of Bona’s advanced tools and materials. The Bona FlexiSand machine delivered exceptional polishing results with controlled power and precision, making it ideal for delicate areas like the Virgil Salon and Haydn Rooms. For the finishing touch, Bona Hard Wax Oil was applied, enhancing the wood’s natural tones while providing a durable coating to withstand the rigors of daily use in a high-traffic venue.

Today, St. Peter Stiftskulinarium’s floors stand as a testament to the perfect marriage of historical preservation and modern craftsmanship. The newly installed oak herringbone flooring in the Main Baroque Hall exudes timeless elegance with unmatched durability, while the refinished floors in the Virgil Salon and Haydn Rooms radiate warmth and charm, protected by their resilient oil finish. This meticulous restoration ensures that the venue continues to captivate visitors while safeguarding its storied past, making it an enduring symbol of heritage and innovation.
