Borthwick Timber Floors, a Bona Certified Craftsman, has skillfully completed an extensive flooring project at the State Library of Victoria, enhancing one of Australia's most revered cultural landmarks. This ambitious undertaking involved installing 5,500 sqm of new flooring and refurbishing 2,500 sqm of existing floors within the heritage-listed site. The State Library, established in 1856 and drawing 1.8 million visitors annually, underwent a five-year transformation, reimagined by architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen and Architectus. Their design ethos prioritized showcasing the library's historical elements while integrating modern, cohesive visitor spaces.
Notably, the project incorporated Tasmanian Oak and a blend of hardwoods including jarrah and blackwood, bringing together visual character and extensive herringbone parquetry. Bona's low-VOC finishes were chosen for their performance and durability, supporting the requirements of the renovation while the library remained in operation. As result, Bona Traffic Matt was specified for all timber flooring surfaces throughout the existing, repaired and newly installed flooring. In addition, Bona Traffic HD Anti Slip was selected for all stair cases and Bona DriFast Ebony Stain was used on the feature hallway leading to the Library’s La Trobe Street entrance.
