Is is safe to clean floors while pregnant?
The quick answer: yes. Most general housework is safe for pregnant women. In fact, light, physical activity is encouraged by doctors. You may have concerns about moving heavy objects or putting extra stress on the body. However, hardwood floor care doesn’t need a heavy vacuum—a lightweight mop is sufficient for great results. The key is finding a mop with an ergonamic design to get corners, crevices and under furniture and avoid awkward bending or squatting to clean the floors.
Remember to go easy when cleaning floors while pregnant and take breaks, if needed. We recommend cleaning sections of the floor rather than tackling the entire floor in one go. If there are any concerns it’s always a good idea to consult a doctor first.
Tips for cleaning while pregnant
General cleaning can still be part of your routine during pregnancy. However, there are a few things to be aware of when cleaning:
- Make sure the space being cleaned is properly ventilated. Open windows, doors or use fans for easy breathing.
- Use gloves, masks or other protective clothing to minimize skin contact with chemicals.
- Skip the plug-in air fresheners. The overpowering scents can be an irritant and associated with an increased risk of asthma and respiratory problems.
- Avoid exposure to cleaning products containing glycol ethers, parabens, phthalates, ammonia, chlorine or anything labeled "toxic". Also, refer to our 'Household Cleaning Combinations to Avoid' Article for more precautions.
- Use products that have third party certifications, like GREENGUARD GOLD, for low chemical emissions. Our Bona Wood Floor Cleaner or Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner make the cut!
