How to deep clean your new home

Feel more at home in your new house with a good deep clean.

Moving into a new home is an exciting time and gives you a fresh start. Before you move in, it’s best to get your home ready with a deep clean. Learning how to deep clean a new house is essential whether you’re moving into an existing house or a new construction. When moving into an existing space, it can be hard to tell just how clean the previous owners left it. While new construction homes haven’t had any previous occupants, chemicals, dirt and debris may still be around. Here are some helpful cleaning tips to help you get settled in your new space.

New home cleaning checklist

If your new home had previous occupants, be sure to do these things as you deep clean.

Reset your space.
Since you might not know every exact detail of your home, start things fresh by changing air filters, toilet seats and bathroom curtains. If any rugs or furniture are left over, it’s best to get rid of those too. Also, be sure to clean both sides of air vents and fans.

Check for pests.
If you have the time, consider having a professional do a walkthrough of your home to make sure its free of bugs and other pests that might be inside or outside the house.

Change the locks.
If possible, change the locks since it can be hard to know if there are any duplicate keys that your unaware of.

New home cleaning tips

  • Focus on tasks, not zones. Most people move from room to room while cleaning but focusing on specific task throughout the house and finishing is more time/energy efficient.

  • Clean from top to bottom. Avoid cleaning random areas of your home. Move from side to side to avoid missing spots. Clean from the top down and avoid having to repeat clean because of dirt and debris settling.

  • Clean surfaces with an S pattern. Using an S-shaped pattern when you wipe down surfaces will help you prevent dirtying previously cleaned surfaces. An S pattern moves from clean to dirty and avoids going over the same area twice.

  • Clean walls and baseboards. If your home is child-free, take this chance to wash walls and baseboards without your current furniture. This will set a good foundation for future cleanings (if/when needed).

  • Give time to sanitize/disinfect. Many people don’t give antibacterial cleaners enough time to disinfect. Disinfectants need at least 10 minutes to set for maximum effectiveness. Check manufacturer’s directions to get the best clean.
