Why EMICODE®?

EMICODE® - a broad view on indoor emissions

An independent institute

In 1997, the Gemeinschaft Emissionskontrollierte Verlegewerkstoffe e. V. (GEV) was founded and created the EMICODE® quality label for building products. The EMICODE® classification system serves as a production and selection guide, enabling installers and consumers to compare and evaluate the emissions of flooring and building products. It aims to create transparency and prevent the inflationary use of non-comparable environmental claims (“green claims”) at an early stage and is now an internationally recognised manufacturer-neutral institution and ecolabel.

More than VOC

For manufacturers to be able to label and advertise their products with the EMICODE® label, they must ensure that they meet a number of environmental criteria. There are several substances that are not allowed in EMICODE® labelled products. The restrictions depend on concentration limits, subsequent chemical labelling, and emission levels. In detail, the following applies:

  • The product must not be toxic.
  • CMRs (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic and Reprotoxic substances) and SVHCs (Substances of Very High Concern) may only be present below the levels that would result in labelling. They must not be detectable in an emission test.
  • Products must not contain oximes methyl ethyl ketoxime, methyl isobutyl ketoxime and acetone oxime.
  • They must comply with the VOC limits for the different classes.

Why Emicode® is important for floor owners

What are VOCs?

VOCs stand for volatile organic compounds. These are carbonbased substances that evaporate at room temperature and end up in the air we breathe. VOCs can be found in a wide range of materials, many of which are common household items. Simply put, if something smells, it probably contains VOCs.

  • Volatile organic compounds
  • Emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids

Lower emissions

Ensuring high indoor air quality is a top priority to secure the health and safety of end users. Choosing Bona products with EMICODE® ensures a healthier indoor environment by minimising emissions.

High levels of VOCs are common in the application of coatings and adhesives. The industry has worked hard to reduce the harmful components to provide the best possible health protection for both craftsmen and consumers. For example, compared to 1997, the TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) content of today’s certified low-emission products is hundreds to thousands of times lower.

  • Less emissions give cleaner air
  • Internationally trusted certification
  • Healthier buildings

New limit values

Concerning VOC emissions, EMICODE® - certified products must observe the following maximum values:

  EC1PLUS EC1 EC2
After 28 days TVOC/TSVOC [μg/m3] ≤ 100 max. 40 SVOC ≤ 150 max. 50 SVOC ≤ 400 max. ≤ 100 SVOC

Why EMICODE® is important for contractors

Ensuring indoor air quality

As a flooring contractor, the health and safety of the end user are paramount. Choosing Bona’s EMICODE®-certified floor coatings and adhesives ensures a healthier indoor environment by minimising emissions. The reduction of VOCs and harmful substances protects the customer and provides great health benefits. In addition, our products comply with strict health and safety regulations, ensuring customer satisfaction and confidence.

  • Low emissions
  • Improved working environment
  • Compliant with regulations

Promoting Sustainability

As end users become more interested in responsible building practices, it is important to be able to offer products that meet these needs. Bona’s EMICODE®-certified products reflect a commitment to lower emissions and are an excellent choice for modern projects. Using materials that minimise environmental impact and encourage renovation rather than replacement of floors reduces resource consumption and waste. It also aligns with the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals efforts and appeals to clients focused on responsible practices.

  • Reducing environmental impact
  • Resource efficiency

Increasing product credibility

Using Bona’s EMICODE®-certified products enhances your reputation as a contractor who values quality and safety. These products offer clear benefits that differentiate services in a competitive market. The EMICODE® label provides a clear indication of low emissions, which builds customer confidence. It sets the benchmark for quality and safety, ensuring high standards on every type of project and differentiating services with highquality, safe products that provide a competitive edge.

  • Trust and transparency
  • Raising industry standards
  • Market differentiation
