Hardwood Floor Recoating

The Bona Recoat Treatment is an excellent alternative to a full refinish. It allows you to safely and effectively clean up and abrade the existing polyurethane surface and apply a fresh coat of finish.

Why Recoating Hardwood Floors Is Essential for Residential and Commercial Projects

Recoat for a longer floor lifetime. Your customers work hard to ensure their wood floors look beautiful, but over time, the finish is slowly worn down by the friction of daily foot traffic. If the necessary steps to properly maintain them are not met, eventually, bare wood will be exposed requiring a complete refinish. Every few years floors can be recoated to maintain their protective layer with the Bona Recoat System. This innovative recoat process effectively removes contaminants from the floor, cleans it thoroughly, and enhances the wood floor with a durable coat of Bona Traffic HD®. In less than a day your customers can have a new coat of finish that restores the beauty and prolongs the life of their wood floor.

Professionals rely on recoating hardwood floors as a proven solution to extend floor longevity, maintain commercial-grade appearance, and avoid the downtime of a full sand-and-refinish process.

Prep and Recoat – Polyurethane Finished Floors

Recoating hardwood floors with a polyurethane finish is the key to maintaining their beauty and durability while also saving time compared to a full refinish. By adding a new layer of protection, you can extend the life of your floor—often with the process ready for light use overnight!

Why Recoat Instead of Refinish?

Recoating hardwood floors is far less invasive and time-consuming than sanding down to bare wood. This method preserves existing finish, renews appearance, and strengthens protection, all without displacing furniture for days.

As always, read and follow all detailed instructions on labels and Technical Data Sheets prior to beginning treatments.

Step 1 - Preparation

Remove furniture from the work area and clean loose dust and debris from the floor using a Bona Dusting Pad or a vacuum.

Step 2 - Deep Cleaning With Bona Prep

Step 2 - Deep Cleaning With Bona Prep

Use Bona Prep as a spray buff solution with a Bona FlexiSand DCS Buffer (or another standard speed 175 rpm buffer) and a Bona Conditioning Pad. Spray Bona Prep over a large section of the floor (approximately 3’x12’) at the rate of 2,000 square feet per gallon. Before spray buffing the next section, remove all residues immediately, using a Bona Microfiber Mop dampened with Bona Prep. NOTE: Overlap sections to ensure that no areas are missed.

Step 3 - Fine Sanding

When dry, abrade the entire floor using the Bona MultiDisc with Bona Diamond 240-grit discs for best results. Alternatively, abrasion can be done using either a Bona Conditioning Pad driving two or three 240-grit Bona Diamond Discs or driving a second Bona Conditioning Pad. All these options will ensure abrasion of the edges next to any over wood and in the grain pattern, and optimize adhesion of the finish top. Wet-tack the floor again to remove dust using a Bona Microfiber Cleaning Pad, a wrung-out cotton towel or cloth dampened with Bona Prep®.

Step 5 - Repeat

To guarantee all contaminates have been removed and meet the Bona Recoat System™ Warranty, it is required that the entire floor be prepared a second time following steps 1-4 (steps 1-7 in the full Recoat System instructions) Repeat until the entire floor has been treated. Perform a final “Rinse” step on the entire floor using the Bona PowerScrubber and the Bona Rinse®.
