Floor renovation for a brighter future

It’s seems old, outdated and in need of a little refreshing. Your first thought might be to rip it out and start anew. But renovations are the savvy, environmental and more sustainable way to update your look. By choosing to remodel, you are making a green choice.

Floor renovation for a brighter future
You almost forget that it’s there. That it’s been part of your life for so long. Your wood floor. Always there, but barely noticed. Until now, that is. It’s seems old, outdated and in need of a little refreshing. Your first thought might be to rip it out and start anew. But renovations are the savvy, environmental and more sustainable way to update your look. By choosing to remodel, you are making a green choice.
Renovate don't replace
Does your floor need a little refreshing? Renovating instead of replacing your floor allows you to keep the beauty while making a significant difference to the planet by reducing the carbon dioxide footprint and using fewer energy resources.
The research
Bona initiated an ambitious project together with the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, to conduct a life cycle analysis of renovating commercial wood floors. The scope of the project focuses on the Swedish flooring market and the national construction industry in Sweden. The study focuses specifically on flooring used in commercial properties in Sweden such as hospitals, schools, offices, stores, malls etc. The results show immense savings of energy and reduced carbon footprint when compared to replacing floors.
Save energy and our climate

95% energy savings
By renovating a floor rather than installing a new one, you save 95%* energy from production of raw materials, resources and travel. This corresponds to the yearly energy use of 9,000 households** or a small Swedish town!
79% CO2 savings
The carbon footprint of renovating a floor is four times lower than replacing the floor and saves 79%* of CO2 emissions due to the products used, electricity, consumables, waste treatment and transport. This is equivalent to 9,600 flights around the world!

Save time and money

Save 40% of costs
When comparing costs for renovating a wood floor with a new installation in a commercial setting, it is important to consider all actions involved. The square metre cost of a new floor is only one part of an installation calculation, so to make a fair calculation comparison you need to include labour costs for ripping out the existing floor, preparation of subfloor, removing and re-mounting skirting boards etc. Plank-by-plank, a renovation of a wood floor works out to be at least 40% less expensive compared to ripping out and installing a new floor.
Save 60% of time
By maintaining and taking care of your wood floor, the time between the need for a complete renovation will be increased. This will save you time and create long-term durability, with minimal downtime.
Note: Internal studies were run in a commercial setting and represent cost and time savings in those applications

Eliminate unnecessary waste from our landfills

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency over 12.2 million tons of wood were deposited into US landfills in 2018. When it comes to wood floors, this waste is unnecessary. Wood floors can last for multiple generations when maintained properly. And that’s just the US. Imagine how much waste that would mean on a global scale.

*** The great circle around the world measures 40,000 km. In cruise the speed of an airliner is about 900km/h. If we divide 40,000/900 it gives us roughly 45 hours. A Boeing 737-400 emits about 250 kg/CO2 per hour (https://www.carbonindependent.org/22.html). 108 000 000 kg/CO2 divided by 250 gives us equivalent of 432 000 hours of CO2 saved.
One lap around the globe takes 45 hours which adds up to 9600 laps around the world.
