How to Get the Bathroom to Smell Good
Let the experts at Bona guide you in ways to get the bathroom to smell good and keep it clean and fresh. Hint: scented cleaners can help! Better cleaning starts with Bona.
The loo, the water closet, powder room or bathroom. Whatever you may call it, it turns out, we humans spend a fair amount of time in the room of rest. It averages to roughly half an hour per day per person, though some do spend more time in the bathroom. That comes to at least 182 hours per year. According to Statista.com, the bath and shower products worldwide market has increased steadily from 40.03 billion U.S. dollars in 2017 to 48 billion dollars in 2022. The point is, it’s a place in the home in which people invest, so it makes sense to make the bathroom smell good and clean whenever possible.
So. While it isn’t hard to create an inviting bathroom environment, it does take a little effort to maintain. To help, we put together a list of nifty tips on how to keep your bathroom clean, tidy and smelling great.

Cleaning to keep the bathroom smelling great
In keeping with true Bona form, and in the interest of your mission to get the bathroom to smell good, Clean your bathroom often. Wipe up the pools of excess water, toothpaste, random hairs, etc. Keep the moisture levels down. In general, having a clean bathroom will do wonders in creating a healthy and clean-smelling environment.
- Wash towels
First, you’ll want to remove anything that needs washing such as towels, washcloths and bath mats and throw them in the washing machine. This should be done weekly, as wet items tend to collect mildew. - Clear and wipe down
Next, clear off your countertops, bathtub or shower ledges, wiping down everything that is cleanable with a multi-purpose antibacterial cleaner. If it’s not cleanable and it’s just laying around, collecting dust (a cotton swab, for example) –– toss it. - Take out the trash
Let’s be honest; bathroom trash is sometimes less than fresh-smelling. If you’re noticing an odor –– get rid of it –– don’t wait until it’s full. You may not need to do so every time, but at least once a month, spray and wipe down the bathroom trash bin, and if you like, you can even add a drop or so of a pleasant-smelling essential oil to your trash bag or bin such as lemon, rosemary, lavender or mint (or a combination of oils). - Clean under the sink
Underneath the bathroom sink is a place that is sometimes overlooked, and as a result –– dank. Such is the case, particularly if there is also a cabinet under the sink (as opposed to a pedestal). Neglected bathroom places can easily turn into funky places for bathroom smells. At least every couple of months, take everything out from under there, and toss out or wash any old sponges or cleaning cloths. Vacuum the space thoroughly, and check for possible breaches, as cabinets are notorious hiding spots for pests. If you do happen to find evidence of mice “visitors,” apart from setting traps and blocking up any holes or cracks, you’ll be happy to know that mice are not fond of scents such as lemon, mint, or cedar, so cleaners that use natural lemon, mint or cedar essential oils (such as Bona Scented Cleaners) will help with deterring rodents –– who, by the way, can be quite smelly.

Don’t forget to ventilate and use your bathroom fan
Perhaps it goes without saying, but most homes nowadays have bathroom fans, which of course, are meant to be used, and used often. They should be switched on whenever the bathroom is in use (unless, of course, you are just brushing your teeth or hair or putting on makeup, etc). The bathroom fan filter needs to be checked and cleaned regularly – about every 2-3 months should be fine. If you have an older bathroom without a ventilation fan, open the window, if possible; or consider having a fan installed.
Create a little bathroom herb garden
Depending on how much space and light you have in your bathroom, it may just be the perfect spot to grow a few lovely herbs to help with the air freshness factor. One can literally spend hundreds of dollars on a space-conscious garden system, complete with hydroponics and grow lights, but small ones designed to sit on a windowsill can also be obtained at a relatively low cost. Hanging plants work well, too. Again, herbs such as lavender, basil, spearmint and lemon verbena are splendid choices.
That about sums the Bona bathroom strategy for how to keep the bathroom smelling great and fresh. We hope you’ll soon be saying, “Gee, my bathroom smells terrific!” Questions or thoughts you’d like to share with us? Send us a note –– we’d love to hear from you!
