Bona has evaluated how different sanding paper perform when running the coarse and medium sanding sequence. Rate of removal, speed, surface quality and durability were the factors measured.

Tested abrasives for coarse & medium sanding

Evaluation of the sequence of coarse & medium sanding includes the following types of abrasives:

Bona 8300 (grit 36) + Bona 8300 (grit 60)
Competitors (grit 36) + Competitors (grit 60)
Bona 8700 (grit 50) + Bona 8300 (grit 80)

Removal efficiency

For coarse sanding the most efficient removal was obtained with Bona 8700 (grit 50) and Bona 8300 (grit 36), both on 90 %. The closest competitor abrasive had an removal efficency of 75%.

Speed

Bona 8300 (grit 36) + Bona 8300 (grit 60) exhibits a 22% shorter sanding time compared to the average results of its zirconium-based competitors. The Bona 8700 (grit 50) + Bona 8300 (grit 80) comes in a close second. This is still faster than all the competitors, as ending the process with a finer grit would reduce the amount of steps needed during final fine sanding.

Durability

For coarse & medium sanding with Bona 8300 (grit 36) + Bona 8300 (grit 60) used only 2 belts to complete the sanding process, showing its ultimate durability and long-lasting properties. Bona 8700 (grit 50) + Bona 8300 (grit 80) did also need only 2 belts. Most competitors used 3 to 4 belts in total.

Surface quality

The surface that has been sanded by Bona Abrasives is smoother, more even, with visibly less fibre ripping. Efficient abrading is accomplished without compromising on gentleness to the floor, resulting in minimal damage to the surface.

Fibre ripping

Using the Bona 8300 (grit 36) and Bona 8700 (grit 50) for coarse sanding resulted in less scratches and fibre ripping on the floor Surface compared with any competitor. This saves time during medium sanding. It becomes even more true when able to start with the finer grit of 50, as the scratches become less deep compared to sanding with a coarser grit. of 36
