Coarse sanding

The coarse sanding could mean all the difference for a perfect final result. It´s all about finding the optimal balance between removal action and gentleness to the wood fibres to do the job, reducing time spent on the following sanding steps. Bona has made an extensive competitor test of different coarse sanding paper to find that clear winner.

Tested abrasives for coarse sanding

Evaluation of coarse sanding includes the following type of abrasives:

• Bona 8700 Ceramic (grit 50)
• Six competitor abrasives (grit 36)
• Bona 8300 Zirconium (grit 36)

Measured factors

  • Rate of removal
  • Speed
  • Durability
  • Surface quality
Removal efficiency

Removal efficiency

For coarse sanding the most efficient removal was obtained with Bona 8700 (grit 50) and Bona 8300 (grit 36), both on 90 %. The closest competitor abrasive had an removal efficency of 75%.

Speed

Speed

The premium Bona 8300 (grit 36) exhibits ultimate speed and toughness. Its unique zirconium mix completed the coarse sanding in only 59 minutes. When the Bona 8700 (grit 50) was used during coarse sanding, the total sanding time was 72 minutes, in second place, still faster than all other competitors despite its finer grit. Additionally, start sanding with a finer grit enables the a total sanding sequence with fewer steps - a faster process in total.

Durability

Durability

During the test of coarse sanding, the Bona 8300 (grit 36) and the Bona 8700 (grit 50) required only 1 belt each to complete the process. All other needed two or more abrasives except for one competitor abrasive which actually made it with one abrasive. However, the competitor abrasive only needing one abrasive did significantly more damage to the surface, showing deep scratches and substantial fibre ripping. Again, the optimal performance of Bona Abrasive puts them in first place.

Surface quality

Surface quality

The surface that has been sanded by Bona Abrasives is smoother, more even, with visibly less fibre ripping. Efficient abrading is accomplished without compromising on gentleness to the floor, resulting in minimal damage to the surface.

Fibre ripping

Fibre ripping

Resulting residue from sanding shows that Bona Abrasives grind the floor gently and evenly, with fine, powdered residue that shows sanding precision and gentleness. Competitors’ results show clearly that wood fibres have been ripped out from the surface, an indication that the abrasive was not suitable for wood sanding.
