What does ISO 14001 mean?

ISO 14001 means continuously improvement. Since 2001 Bona is certified according to the international standard ISO 14001. ISO 14001 is the international standard for environmental management systems stating how environmental work is to be carried out in a company. As a manufacturer of floor coating, we are eager to take our responsibility. All industrial activity affects the environment and our activities are no exception. Bona is highly involved in all environmental questions that affect us in one way or another. The environmental work at Bona AB is based on our environmental objectives. Here are some examples of the environmental objectives that affect all of Bona:
• All our solvent based finishes in Europe were phased out in February 2009
• We continue to reduce the environmental effect that the transportation from our activities give rise to.
• We continue to reduce the impact on man and environment that is caused by our products.

Do you test your products on animals?

No.

Oil or varnish – what’s the difference when it comes to appearance?

Oil gives a natural matt finish to a wooden floor. Especially on dark timbers oil brings the grain alive. Oil works on lighter timbers as well, however dirt is more visible on these timbers. It’s important that oil is applied until the wood is saturated, and in a correct manner, as too little and poorly applied oil lead to the floor becoming dirty too quickly.
Varnishes offer several finishes or sheen levels, normally choices of matt, silk matt or glossy. Choosing a really matt finish and a neutral stain, a varnished floor can actually look like it’s been oiled. Use Bona Wood Floor and Furniture Varnish Extra Matt to achieve an appearance similar to an oiled finish.

Oil or varnish – what’s the difference when it comes to resistance?

Oil penetrates into the wood and the wood itself provides the wear resistance. If an oiled wooden floor is to be used in an area of heavy wear, consider choosing a harder timber. An oiled floor offers little resistance to chemicals and scuffmarks. On the other hand, scratches are almost invisible and marks can be repaired quite easily.
Varnishes provide a surface with superb wear and chemical resistance. Some varnishes offer slip resistance, which is extra friction useful in for example stairs or children’s rooms.

Oil or varnish – what’s the difference when it comes to maintenance?

An oiled floor demands relatively high maintenance to keep its appearance. Cleaning procedures like mopping and buffing removes oil from the floor. Depending on wear and how much water is used for cleaning, oiled floors need re-oiling.
Varnished floors are easier to maintain. Floors in even heavily used areas may only need re-sanding and recoating once every few years.

Oil or varnish – what’s the difference when it comes to the environmental aspects?

Bona Indoor Oil is a sustainable alternative to waterborne varnishes as it is a waterborne oil with a solid content of ~95%.

I have used other manufacturers' products on my floor in the past. Can you help me get those products off my floor?

We recommend calling the manufacturer of the other products to determine what they recommend to remove their products. They know the chemical composition of their products and will know the best methods for removing them.

Does Bona offer other products for my wood floors?

Yes we do. Bona is the worldwide leader and innovator in wooden flooring products for professionals since 1919. Bona's complete system of products includes: adhesives, abrasives, machines, finishes, sealers, stains and floor care.

What is the difference between the wood cleaner, oil cleaner and the tile and laminate cleaner?

Bona Wood Floor Cleaner is specifically designed for unwaxed polyurethane finished or prefinished floors. Bona Tile & Laminate Cleaner has a slightly different formula designed for most other hard, sealed surfaces. Bona Oil cleaner is specially designed for oiled floors.

Do I need to dilute or mix Bona cleaners with water?

No, all cleaners are ready to use.

Can I clean my laminate floors with Bona Wood Floor Cleaner?

Bona Wood Floor Cleaner can be used on laminate flooring. Although our wood cleaner is gentle enough, we always recommend using a cleaner that is specifically designed for the surface that needs to be cleaned. Bona Tile & Laminate Floor Cleaner is specifically designed for stone, tile and laminate surfaces.

How do I assemble the Bona Wood Floor Mop?

We recommend watching our short Mop Assembly video . Push the green locking sleeve down near the cartridge receiver cup prior to connecting lower and upper assembly. Slide upper and lower pieces together following the channel groove and then slide the green locking sleeve up flush with the bottom of the top handle piece. The key step is to ensure the green locking ring is NOT engaged prior to putting the upper and lower assembly together.

Are the cartridges for the Bona Floor Mop refillable?

Yes, they are. The new refillable cartridge easily refills with economy size Bona cleaners. Designed specifically for wood floor care, this combination of mop and cartridge provides you with beautiful, clean, healthy wood floors while keeping excess waste out of landfills.

Your instructions say "rinse pad often to avoid streaking." What does this mean? I was told not to use water on my floor.

When streaking appears on the floor, it means your cleaning pad is filled with dirt. Just rinse it out with water, wring it out well leaving it just damp, and put it back on your mop. If your floor is very dirty you may not be able to clean the entire room before the pad needs rinsing.

What is Bona Wood Floor Polish?

Polish with its urethane-acrylic blend evens out the floor's appearance and provides a durable wear layer. The polish is available in two sheen levels: Gloss and Matt. Gloss gives the floor a shiny appearance and Matt provides a satin or matte appearance. Bona Polish can be applied over any sealed or polyurethane finished floor, old or new. Polish is not re-coatable with polyurethane finishes including Bona Refresher. Use every 1-2 months to keep floors looking their best.
Always refer to the Polish back label instructions before application and watch our instructional video, I Want To Polish My Floors, for more information.

What is the difference between Bona Refresher and is Bona Polish? Is it the same product?

Refresher is 100% polyurethane and is re-coatable. It is not the same product as Polish. You can put Polish on top of Refresher, but you CANNOT put Refresher on top of Polish.

I have applied one coat of the Refresher and now my floor has an uneven sheen. What has gone wrong?

An uneven sheen after one coat of Refresher must not necessarily mean that something has gone wrong. If the surface you applied the Refresher on was very matt initially, then you may be required to simply apply another coat. Nevertheless, a prerequisite for a uniform sheen and appearance is that the Refresher is applied evenly and in consistent amounts.

I have changed my mind and I want to remove the Refresher. How do I do it?

The Refresher has been formulated to adhere to most surfaces and offers good protection to common household chemicals, why a complete removal can be a tricky undertaking.

Option 1:
Within the first week from the date of application the Refresher can usually be removed by dissolving it with a strong alkaline cleaning agent (pH around 11) such as a so called stripper or polish remover. Please note that excessive amounts of water and cleaning solution may damage the wooden floor. Follow stripping instructions per manufacturer’s recommendations.

Option 2:
Once the Refresher has fully cured it can only be removed by sanding the floor. Sand the floor lightly using a fine abrasive grit 180 or finer. It is possible to use more aggressive abrasives but the final sanding must always be carried out using a fine. Vacuum and wipe off the floor with a damp cloth. Apply 1-2 coats of Bona Wood Varnish.

NOTE:
Abrasion and refinishing of wooden floors requires a good hand with floor works. If any uncertainty exists, contact a professional.

I have been using the Refresher regularly but to further protect my floor I want to apply another coat of real finish on top. Can I over coat the Refresher?

Yes, in contrast to floors treated with polish, wax or similar material, a floor maintained with the Bona Refresher can still be over coated with finish.
NOTE: Abrasion and refinishing of wooden floors requires a good hand with floor works. If any uncertainty exists, contact a professional.

After I refreshed my wooden floor, the kids came running in while it still was wet. Now we have the marks of children feet everywhere. What can we do?

The situation may sound bad but the remedy is not far away. Gently abrade the marks from the feet with a scotch brite pad or a very fine abrasive until all surface irregularities disappear. Then apply two coats of the Refresher.

I spilled Refresher all over my pants. Now that they’ve dried, they feel all stiff and I can’t use them. I’ve tried washing them afterwards but that didn’t work.

Should you spill Refresher on your clothes, it is crucial that the stained clothes are put in water as soon as possible and then in the washing machine. If the Refresher dries, it cannot be removed.

What is VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)?

Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are organic chemical compounds which can affect the environment and human health. When a finish dries on the floor, solvents evaporate. These evaporated substances are an example of VOC. Choosing a finish and adhesive with low solvent content leads to lower emissions of VOC, which contributes to a better working environment and less environmental impact.
What is cobalt?
Cobalt compounds are often added in oils as a drier. Cobalt and cobalt compounds are dangerous to human health. Due to the health risks involving Cobalt, Bona does not use this material in any of its products.
