As a part of improving working conditions for floor sanding professionals, the Swedish company, Bona, has developed a system for dust-free floor sanding. Recently the efficiency of this system was proven by Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the Örebro University Hospital, Sweden, whose study could show that the Bona DCS released only 5% of the normal occupational exposure limit for wood dust.

Sanding wood floors has always been associated with lots of dust. With a patented new technology to vacuum up wood dust during floor sanding, BonaKemi’s new Dust Care Systems, DCS, has been developed to meet high health and environmental requirements. Many sanding professionals praise the dust-free sanding for the improved workplace environment. Now the flooring contractor can escape the unhealthy dust that causes irritating nose and throat problems.

The effects of the new Dust Care System (DCS) are scientifically proven. The latest independent scientific research carried out by the Örebro University Hospital in Sweden evaluated sanding a room with an ordinary dust collection bag compared with sanding the same room with the Dust Care Single attached to a sanding machine via a hose. The recommended limit for airborne sanding dust in Sweden is 2 mg per cubic metre of air. With the Dust Care Single, the reading was 0.1 mg/m3, which is 5% of the limit. With the ordinary dust collection bag, the reading was 1.4 mg/m3, 70% of the limit. This shows that the Dust Care Single is a more effective collector of dust. The measurement of 0.1 mg/m3 was so low that it was barely detectable using the laboratory measuring equipment.

Measurements show that Bona’s dust-free sanders exhaust better and cleaner air quality that found in the room before starting the sanding. This means that the flooring professional doesn’t need to jeopardise his health during sanding. To worry about the growing problem with allergies are now unnecessary for booth floor installers and owners.

- Our goal is to steer development of new products that contribute as little as possible to environmental or health-related problems”, says Bona CEO Kerstin Lindell. Currently, floor sanding professionals, as a group, are already exposed to a number of health risks. We are trying to improve their working environment simultaneously with making their job easy, simple and cost-effective using our new sanders.

“We help the customer to not only preserve the environment and keep their health, but to also save time. When floor sanding professions now use the Bona Dust Care System the time-consuming preparatory and follow-up work is no longer needed,” says Kerstin Lindell, CEO at Bona. By requesting dust-free sanding, there is no need for covering and protecting furnishings in homes of businesses,” says Kerstin Lindell. This means a faster return to a fresh home and for companies such as clothing stores or restaurants, a much speedier return to operations than ever before.

With this modern technology, which is adapted to today’s environmental requirements, Bona is counting on dust-free sanding becoming the standard in the sanding industry.
